From a chicken coop, to a storage unit…to finally- something useful and beautiful! All the details on how I DIY’d the Home Office of my dreams!

Have you ever looked at space, a room, a home, a shed, and imagined what COULD be? That’s how I look at everything unfinished, unwelcoming, ready to be trashed. When I see a space that I could redo, it’s ALL I think about!
I have been waiting to write this post for over a year! When i unlocked the shed for the first time over a year ago, my husband thought I was absolutely insane that I’d ever make it a space for anything other than piles of junk. It was filled with over 50 years of junk and locked up for no one to go in ever again. Before that, it was a chicken coop that my husbands grandfather had built. I unlocked the door and told me husband, “I’m going to make this an office space for me”. His response….like most other times, “sure meg..ok.”
A few months later I got a dumpster bag, loaded up all the junk and slowly cleaned it out. My next project was the floors. I was looking for a flooring that was easy, no nonsense and on the cheaper end while still looking beautiful. I decided on the Tarkett vinyl planks, self adhesive as well so they just stuck down on the concrete. After sweeping the floors, I put a layer of adhesive to the concrete and laid the flooring. Our family worked together to put the flooring down and in the end it only took us a couple of hours. We used a 1, 2, 3 pattern for the floors for the staggered look. These planks were simple and came out really beautiful looking! They’ve held up well and I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up loving them. (You can read all the details of the flooring over at my other blog post HERE)
Next up came the walls- my go to easy and cheap DIY shiplap walls were the route that I took for them. The walls in here before were just sheets of metal that had been leftovers from other job sites. To make sure that the walls were level and wouldn’t droop, we added strips behind them every 16 inches for a nailing point. We used ¼ plywood underlayment sheets for the shiplap in 8 inch strips that we ripped down on the table saw. Starting at the bottom and going up, we used a small spacer to give the shiplap look without the tongue and groove costs! The walls cost me less than $200 to do. Using a paint sprayer, I painted the entire shed with Sherwin Williams Alabaster paint. It is my go-to for any white around our home now! I LOVE it. It’s perfect. If you’re looking for a white, that’s the one you want. Not super bright white, not too warm and yellowish…the most perfect white I’ve ever used.
Electric came next! Although there were a couple outlets in there, they were far outdated and not enough for what I was looking to do out there. So we had our favorite electrician come over and wire in some new outlets, electric heaters and a light on the ceiling and outside. The ceiling light is from amazon, linked here.

Finally all of the hard work was done and it as time to furnish the shed. My FAVORITE part of it all! Raymour and Flanigan (my favorite furniture store ever!) had everything I could ever want (and do for most of my projects!). They are always the first place I look for furniture and usually don’t have to look anywhere else. Everything is well made and fits our style perfectly. In the space I knew I needed a desk (since it was supposed to be an office and all- more so that my husband didn’t think I’d be going to live in there! haha!) I found the perfect desk for the style that I was going for here. I ordered a gorgeous farmhouse style couch and corner accent chair in the exact colors that I was looking for, and an amazing coffee table and end tables that looked like it was just made for this spot! It all came together with a few plants, a rug from Boutique Rugs, and some greenery of course!
I can’t wait to spend hours working in here, spending time with my girlfriends and having a nice space to getaway and read a book in silence. My favorite part is that I get to tell my husband “ I told ya so!”
